When to Choose our Rapid Spray Tan Solution (And When Not To)
As a spray tan artist, choosing the right solution for your client isn’t just about colour, it’s about lifestyle, timing, skin type, and expectations.
One of the most commonly requested (and sometimes misunderstood) options is a rapid spray tan solution.
So when should you reach for our rapid? And when is it better to stick with a traditional solution?
Let’s break it down!
What Is a Rapid Spray Tan?
A rapid spray tan is designed to develop faster than a traditional solution, allowing your client to rinse off anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours, depending on their desired depth.
Unlike standard tans that require 6–8+ hours before rinsing, rapid solutions give your client flexibility, making them a go to for busy lifestyles.
When You SHOULD Choose a Rapid Solution:
1. Your Client Is Short on Time
This is the most obvious and most common reason.
If your client:
• Has an event the same day
• Is tanning in the morning before work
• Can’t sleep in their tan overnight
👉 A rapid solution is your best friend.
Pro tip: Always tailor rapid rinse times clearly:
• 30–60 mins → light glow
• 1–2 hours → medium
• 2–4 hours → dark
2. They Hate Sleeping in Tan
Some clients simply cannot sleep in fake tan.
Whether it’s:
• Sticky feeling
• Fear of transfer onto sheets
• Sensitivity to smell
Rapid eliminates the overnight discomfort and gives a much better client experience.
3. You Want More Control Over Depth
Rapid solutions give customisable results based on rinse time.
This is perfect when:
• A client is unsure how dark they want to go
• You’re working with a new client
• You want to avoid over processing
👉 You can guide them rather than lock them into one result.
4. Back to Back Appointments & High Client Turnover
From a business perspective, rapid tans are a dream.
They allow you to:
• Service last minute bookings
• Offer same day tans before events
• Increase flexibility in your schedule
Perfect for peak periods like:
• Weddings
• Formals
• Holidays
• Weekends
5. Experienced Tanning Clients
Rapid solutions work best when the client:
• Understands rinse timing
• Follows instructions properly
• Has had spray tans before
👉 They’re more likely to get optimal results.
When You Should AVOID Rapid Solutions
1. First-Time Clients
If it’s their first spray tan, rapid can be risky.
Why?
• They may rinse too early → underdeveloped tan
• Or too late → overdeveloped/too dark
👉 A standard solution is often safer for predictable results.
2. Clients Who “Set and Forget”
If your client:
• Is forgetful
• Has a busy schedule
• Won’t follow rinse instructions properly
Rapid is not ideal.
👉 Timing is everything with rapid and mistakes show.
3. Very Fair or Nervous Clients
For very fair skin tones or anxious clients, rapid can feel unpredictable.
Even though it’s controllable, the idea of “timing their colour” can overwhelm them.
👉 A standard solution gives a more gradual, foolproof result.
4. Clients Wanting Maximum Depth Without Risk
While rapid can go dark, leaving it on too long increases risk of:
• Overdevelopment
• Dryness
• Uneven fade
👉 In some cases, a traditional dark solution is a safer option.
Pro Tips for Using Rapid Solutions
• Always consult properly: lifestyle, timing, and experience matter
• Be VERY clear with rinse instructions (write them down or text them)
• Use a pH balancing primer to ensure even development
• Educate on post-care: no sweating, water, or products before rinse
• Check in with new clients after their tan to refine future results
Final Thoughts
Rapid spray tan solutions are one of the most powerful tools in your kit but only when used correctly.
The key is matching the solution to the client, not just the occasion.
👉 When used strategically, rapid tans can:
- Elevate your client experience
- Increase bookings
- Position you as an expert artist, not just a technician
