Salon Question:
Question: Does ocean water and pool water affect the life of a spray tan?
Client Question: I have a client that I think is DHA resistant because they gets dark after I spray them but after 5 hrs they has a quick rinse & most of the tan like 80% is off. Is there anything you recommend that I can do to advise that the tan DHA will develop deeper for them. I was thinking maybe they needs to be sprayed with the pH first? Can you help me out & how do you work with the pH spray?
Want to know how to make your spray tan last?
Treat it like a pharmaceutical product. So to know how to keep a spray tan longer you need to be aware of the composite of your spray tan solution. Inside the bottle of spray tan solution you have two key ingredients - 1) the tanning ingredient, DHA (dihydroxyacetane) and 2) the instant bronzers which are seen when tan is applied to the skin. The bronzers are made up on dyes and colourings. What many people don't know is that DHA and bronzers aren't friends. In fact they are spray tan frenemies. Together one of them provides the instant bronzed glow, while the other is the active ingredient that works with the wearer's skin to create the tan that will last on your skin for about a week......
So you love to stand behind a gun but need the tips to go from being a bronzer beginner to a spray tan super hero.
1) Tan. That's right. Repetition is the key. You are only as good as your last spray tan, and Rome wasn't built in a day. The more skin you tan, the more confidence you gain. You'll develop your own style and will learn how to fix the mistakes that come from being too green (your ability, not your tan that is).
If this statistic doens't make you sick, I'm not sure what will. A recent Teen Vogue article says that over 2 million American teens are taking to the sizzle station (aka solarium) every week to achieve the deathly faux glow.
While the Eastern culture don't understand it, the Western culture converserly are literally dying for a tan. Dark, golden limbs have been popular since Coco Chanel pioneered the tan as a status symbol back in the 1920s. During that decade, Vogue had also clearly told their readers that "The 1929 women must be tan". The continual rise and rise of the tan is well documented here and despite the risks, the tabu tan is still (excuse the pun) in vogue.
One of the best tanning tips is how to apply self tanner. There's a fine line between faking it and making it. Not only do you need to arm yourself with the best fake tan, but you also need to know how to execute these tanning tips.
One of the best spray tan tips is learning how to control the colour you will go. How dark your tan will be has a number of factors. We've called our brand Custom Tan because - everyone gets a custom colour because everyone has a different skin tone, and because you can customise the colour of your skin by determining how long you choose to leave the bronzer on before you wash it off. Let's explain.
How does fake tan actually work?
The way you achieve a gorgeous tan is via a chemical reaction between the outer layer of your skin (the stratum corneum) and the tanning ingredient (Dihydroxyacetane - DHA).

It's been over 85 years and the popularity of the fake tan keeps climbing and climbing - so just how did tanning get it's legs and why?
The History of Tan
Early on tans were associated with being lower class. It was a symbol of poverty of those who worked outdoor in the hot sun. But Coco Chanel was iconic enough to change an era of fashion led followers. Coco Chanel spent time out sailing the Riviera on the Duke of Westminister's yacht "Flying Cloud" and came back with a tan and it had instant appeal as modern, luxurious and independent. At the same time, the medical field went from saying that sun was a dangerous thing to being a cure within a span of 30 years and by the end of the 20’s beauty bible Vogue wrote “the 1929 girl must be tan” and she was. That was 85 years ago and since their arrival, tans have never gone out of fashion

Need tips for glowing skin? A body scrub can be the best exfoliator and popular for totally natural skin care - and they work.
Body scrubs have been around for thousands of years. During ancient Egyptian times both men and women would scrub their bodies to soften their skin exposed to the arid desert conditions and to avoid fine lines and wrinkles. Exfoliation is still a critical beauty treatment with a great number of health and beauty benefits coming from the humble body scrub.
Body scrub benefits
What's not to love. The body scrub works by: removing dead skin cells and dirt from the outermost layers of the skin, create glowing skin, revitalising texture and tone of skin, moisturizing and replacing natural oils, stimulating blood flow, encourage cell renewal and works to eliminate excess fluids and toxins, tighten and firm the skin and to reduce cellulite.

One of the highlights of the Mercedes Benz Fashion week has got to be the body painted sand bikini worn by Imogen Anthony last night. Imogen is definitely making a mark for herself rather than riding on coat-tails of her controversial beau Kyle Sandilands This home grown Bowral girl is now strutting her stuff, closing near-nude for local brand Bondi Bather which she calls 'liberating' and we couldn't agree more.
Every week we'd be asked dozens of times - how long will my spray tan last. The answer is as long as the skin tanned stays on your body. So - this is why it's critical to exfoliate before your tan but equally important to use a good quality moisturiser to keep your tan on. One of our spray tan salons in Oakleigh Victoria has started running beauty blogs and features Custom Tan Facial Spray
How to apply a facial bronzer
As Amea explains in the video above a facial spray is a great product for every beauty kit. To apply the facial bronzer, you can either push the atomiser for a soft fine mist, or alternatively pump onto a makeup sponge or tanning mitt and apply to the face. We've been known to be rushing a few times - and have popped it directly onto fingers and then onto our face. This is fine, just remember to wash your hands so you don't have that tell tale tanned palms look.
Every Tuesday we open up the opportunity for our salons and customers to ask us anything related to fake tanning. This week's question was about moisturising and when you should moisturise after a spray tan appointment. It's a great question, and one that spray tan clients often receive various forms of feedback about. The answer all comes down to what sort of spray tan solution you are being sprayed in, or alternatively what sunless tan you are using.
How fake tanning works
Sunless tanning is a chemical reaction between the outler layer of your skin, and the tanning ingredient, known as DHA. Your skin goes brown the same way that a cut piece of fruit or a potato turns brown when it is left for a period of time after being cut. The longer the tan is left on - or the longer the fruit is left out on the bench after cutting - the darker the result. With any sunless tanning product, whether its' a spray tan or a tan cream, 60% of colour happens in the first 2 hours. This enables the wearer to wash the colour off rather than walking around in it for the 8 hours we only knew about decades ago.
The Custom Tan Spray Tanning Dress has been added to the short list of favs for Kimberly Nissen from The Plastic Diaries article: Fake Tan Latest Innovations and New Products.
Kimberly says "Going to a salon for a professional spray tan is usually my preferred method but one of the reasons I hated it was finding something to wear afterwards. I know, it sounds stupid but if you have ever done it you will know what I mean. You can’t wear underwear or bras so not only do you need something 100% opaque but you need something that won’t cling. Sitting in a car or on a bus/train is impossible because the tan makes you sticky and stain everything you sit on. Finally, the wrong kind of fabric can spell disaster for your tan so not every bit of old raggedy clothing can become your “tan wear”. Enter the Spray tanning dress and never worry about what to wear again.
The Spray Tanning Dress is made from super soft bamboo jersey cotton so it feels great to wear while serving many purposes. The V-neck style keeps you protected from seatbelt marks; a babydoll style skims curves and hangs perfectly from under the bust; and the Hi-Low skirt provides that necessary protection when sitting without the rubbing from unnecessary excess material of a maxi dress. The dark black hue keeps stains invisible and you can safely ditch the underwear without risk of people knowing. Available in Small (8-12) and Large (12-16), it’s the LBD I can’t live without"
